MBBR Technology

The MBBR technology from SFC Umwelttechnik revolutionizes wastewater treatment worldwide and significantly contributes to improving water quality.

This innovative solution helps to efficiently and sustainably treat both industrial and municipal wastewater, positively impacting people’s lives. It is also used for further treatment of already treated wastewater or water.

MBBR Functionality

The Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology utilizes an aeration tank (similar to an activated sludge tank) equipped with special plastic carriers. These carriers provide an ideal surface for the growth of a biofilm that ensures effective wastewater treatment. Made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), for example, the carriers have a density very close to that of water (0.95 g/cm³ to 1 g/cm³). The aeration system ensures that the carriers remain in constant motion, maximizing contact between the wastewater and the biomass on the carriers. A sieve at the edge of the tank prevents the carriers from escaping the system.

What Makes MBBR Unique

Compared to traditional activated sludge systems, the MBBR technology offers numerous advantages. Biofilm processes generally require less space as the biomass is more concentrated, and the system’s efficiency is less dependent on sludge separation. Additionally, the MBBR system does not require sludge recycling, simplifying operation and reducing costs.

A significant advantage is the ability to retrofit existing aeration tanks to increase capacity without additional space requirements. The number of carriers can be flexibly adjusted to meet specific requirements. The MBBR systems are characterized by a longer sludge retention time, which supports nitrification, and they respond to load fluctuations without manual intervention. Other benefits include lower sludge production and reduced space requirements. Additionally, the systems are resistant to toxic loads, and their performance is independent of the secondary clarifier as no sludge return is required.

The MBBR technology from SFC Umwelttechnik offers an innovative, compact, and efficient solution for wastewater treatment. This technology helps improve water quality globally and protect the environment by providing a sustainable and cost-effective method for wastewater treatment. An important advantage is that the SFC MBBR technology can be combined with C-TECH™ and C-MEM™, achieving additional benefits such as reduced space requirements and higher cleaning performance.
