It can effectively remove anthropogenic trace substances introduced by humans into the water cycle, as well as arsenic and manganese from drinking water, or filamentous microorganisms in bulking sludge. Thus, C-ION™ actively combats health risks for nature and society.
C-ION™ Functionality
The C-ION™ oxidation technology uses an electrical glow discharge to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a non-thermal plasma (NTP) that possess a very high oxidation potential. These radicals can effectively oxidize both organic and inorganic compounds in the water, including many problematic and risky substances.
Anthropogenic trace substances are chemical compounds used in many areas of daily life, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, cleaning, and disinfecting agents. These compounds, which serve our health, comfort, and well-being, enter the water cycle as pollutants. Their harmful effects are not yet fully researched. Even minimal amounts of these substances—including X-ray contrast agents, industrial chemicals, ingredients of detergents, food additives, and pesticides—can have negative impacts on aquatic life and humans and are efficiently removed by C-ION™.
Another application area for the C-ION™ technology is the suppression of bulking sludge. In activated sludge bioreactors, the selective destruction of filamentous microorganisms such as Microthrix Parvicella and Nocardia leads to improved sludge flocculation and better settling behavior without impairing the degradation capacity of the sludge flocs. This reduces the need for additional flocculating chemicals.
The removal of manganese and arsenic is also another important application area. Manganese and arsenic, naturally occurring elements in groundwater, pose a significant health risk in drinking water. The C-ION™ technology combines advanced oxidation with non-thermal plasma, iron coagulation, and ultrafiltration membranes (C-MEM™) to remove these substances. This combination enables a reduction of manganese and arsenic by over 99%.
